Three good Louisville restaurants visitors don't hear about

Louisville is a great town for dining out, but many visitors miss out on some of the most interesting restaurants in our fine city. Three of them are in my neighborhood.

The 2014 PGA Championship is this week (August 4) and there will be many visitors in Louisville looking for potential dining spots around town. When they google "Louisville restaurants" they will find the usual suspects in the results. A good general list of Louisville restaurants is also available from Louisville Eater, but I want to offer three restaurants that don't make such lists, but I think should.

These three restaurants are in my neighborhood, they are off the beaten path, and they don't attract attention like other eateries in town. And, by that I mean, if you are a recognizable, semi-famous golfer, for example, these places may provide a more subdued dining experience while still providing a satisfying meal. Not much frou-frou taking place at these restaurants.

Goose Creek Diner

If you are looking for good southern-style cooking served without pretense then Goose Creek Diner is the place. This diner serves some of best food in town without charging an arm and a leg for the privilege. The fried green tomatoes are a must. My go-to favorites for entrées are fried chicken livers and the Goose Creek Diner version of the hot brown.

El Mariachi

I am a big fan of Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine and one of my recent favorite spots is El Mariachi. Located in a non-distinct strip mall near my home, this tiny restaurant serves authentic Mexican-style food at a ridiculously reasonable price. I am fond of the regular tacos and the tamales are among the best in town.

Corner Café

The Corner Café has been around for a long time and is still one of my fall back restaurants. Tucked away behind another Lyndon institution Wish's Drugs, the Corner Café sports a large menu of items ranging from some terrific diner salads, specialty sandwiches, Italian subs and pasta, and pizza. I am particularly fond of the Cajun Pecan Chicken Salad and the Blackened Chicken Sandwich.

Louisvillians love to eat out. So, because of that fact, there are more good restaurants than can possibly be mentioned in a blog post. Or show up in a Google search even. I invite you to add your favorite neighborhood restaurant to this brief list. What is your default, fallback restaurant and why do you recommend it?
